First SUV?

While many (most?) of the vehicles we see on the trail are Jeeps in the ‘standard’ form, lately we’ve been noticing a greater number of SUVs. It’s not difficult to guess why SUVs are increasingly popular for exploring the backcountry. They’ve been around nearly as long as the Jeep (and similar short-wheelbase vehicles), and since most families have 2.5 children, if the kids are enjoying exploration; it’s most likely in an SUV.

When we’re not busy working on amazing new books and running trails, we look for interesting things around the internet that we can share. Today we found a very cool article on the history of the SUV.

While some in the Jeep world may think the Jeep Wagoneer (SJ) was the first SUV, in reality, this classic vehicle style has been around for much, much longer.

Like many things, the ‘actual’ first SUV is contested, as the article from Bitrebels.com goes into. Some say it was a Russian Pobeda, some say the Willy’s Jeep Station wagon, among others.
In all likelihood, the first SUV must have been the Chevy Carryall Suburban, first produced in 1935. Believe it or not, the SUV craze that’s been going for decades began with a Texas Caddilac.
