Overview

First part of a great offroad trip along U.S. border.

Follow historic route across southwestern Arizona desert, passing through Organ Pipe Cactus N.M., Cabeza Prieta N.W.R. and Goldwater Range. All-day trip features Bates Well, Tule Well Camp and the High Tanks (Tinajas Altas), nine natural granite pools stacked one above the other. Great camping nearby. From here, continue west on trail #99, or head north to I-8. We don’t recommend trail for ATVs and UTVs, although they are allowed if street legal. Few side roads to explore after leaving BLM land. Maximum four vehicles per group. Heavily watched over by U.S. Border Patrol.

We encountered absolutely no “Poof” dust. The trail was dry and hard-packed dirt. I recommend camping near the High Tanks Waypoint 05. If you are carrying a weapon be sure to mention it FIRST to Border Patrol if you are stopped by them. They usually will just wave as you drive by.
