Overview

Incredibly steep descent from summit.

The thing you’ll remember most about this trail is the extremely steep descent at the end. Although scenery is breathtaking at the top, you may be a bit preoccupied to enjoy it. Use your lowest gear and brake as little as possible. Do not lock up your brakes. If you feel your back end sliding sideways, you may have to apply a little gas to straighten yourself out.

Trail Ratings Defined

South end of trail winds steeply uphill through the forest with intermittent rocky and muddy sections. The climb continues above timberline to the very top of Red Cone. At that point, if you don’t like what you see, you can turn around. Don’t descend if BOTH sides of Webster Pass are blocked by snow. You’ll be boxed in with no place to go. Aggressive stock SUVs only and experienced drivers.

Red Cone was extremely beautiful and fun to decent from the top. But it was extremely rocky getting to the top that I wouldn’t do it again. Not that dangerous just extremely rocky.

We rode this trail in a UTV in the summer of 2018. Generally, Red Cone is a bit more difficult, however, we found coming down Handcart Gulch was a little easier. There wasn’t much snow at Webster Pass, but of course, this area is commonly blocked by snow in early summer.

Awesome Trail. Not for the faint of heart. Best View in CO. Be Ready. :)

Red cone and Radical hill are the best in the area. Easy to connect them both. A great longer day is North fork Swan, down Radical Hill, over Webster Pass and back Redcone to Montezuma. Or Redcone from 285 then up Radical hill and down north or middle fork Swan to Breck or Deer creek to Montezuma.

Travelled Red Cone on 8-17-2022 on an ATV. First third of the trail was slow and very rocky. A 90 degree steep uphill turn was severely eroded and dangerous for ATV’s. Hard core modified made it with little difficulty. One-way steep descent from the top of Red Cone was not a problem for us. Incredible views but I would not travel Red Cone again on an ATV.
