Overview

Amazing views from top of major ski area.

Climb Peak 9 through Breckenridge Ski Area and cross over to Peak 10 near the end. Absolutely stunning scenery, even if you don’t go all the way to the top. A thrilling adventure you’ll long remember.

Rating

Moderate
Trail Ratings Defined

Lower part through ski area is easy. At the top, trail narrows with tight switchbacks. Although the last mile has no real obstacles, it is very intimidating. Experienced drivers in aggressive stock SUVs can do it. Low range gearing required at the top.

Made it almost 2/3 the way up yesterday, chose not to continue as the drifts were 1-2 feet in places on the trail and it was pretty slick. Still, amazing views.

This is a short, sweet and really fun road with a quick hike to the peak 10 summit at the end. I think the most technical part of the road is right around the gates at the top of the ski area so if your rig can make the rocks and ruts in that area then there is only one rocky switchback right at the top that may challenge you. I did it one time with a guy who had a new stock Jeep Renegade and he didn’t have any trouble. There is often a flag at the summit that makes for a fun photo opportunity and the views in all directions are spectacular. Crystal lakes (seen below from over the top of the switchbacks) is a great similarly difficult trail that is worth doing or the slightly easier mount baldy right across highway 9 are both great trails that start right near Breck that could be easily combined in a day with this one.

Drove this on 9/4/23, and wouldn't recommend unless you're ready for rather deep ruts and jagged rocks. Probably due to the rain this year. Someone said they saw someone do it in a stock Jeep Renegade, definitely unlikely now. Driving on 33" tires, I had to go around one area. Also, if you have a full size truck, please don't go past the overlook restaurant. The trail gets really narrow and passing Wranglers is hard enough as it is.
