Enjoy misty ocean views along a forgotten beach while exploring a remote coastal road. Camp and relax in near seclusion. Swing through Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, where you might get lucky like we did and see an elk or two strolling past the visitor center. When you’re done, head north on Highway 101 for a drive through amazing Humbolt Redwoods State Park, where you’ll see some of the largest redwood trees in California.

Drove the first 20 miles of this trail starting from the South. Easy ride to Usal Beach as described in the book. Past Usal Beach, the trail is much more rutted, narrow, and moderately overgrown. Cannot imagine doing the entire ride in 2-3 hours and I was in a lifted Jeep Rubicon with 37s. Hard to avoid bushes and small tree limbs from scraping the vehicle. Average speed 6-8 MPH. Stock SUV would have no problems but I would not do this trail in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Beautiful drive through the redwoods.

We drove this trail June 3 2021. Weather was clear. We have a stock 2018 Jeep Wrangler JLUS. This trail is deeply rutted in places. Brush scraped along the sides and top of the Jeep in places. According to GAIA map. Our average speed was 6 miles an hour. Had to drive mostly in 4 low. With so many obstacles to avoid, I think Imogene pass was easier!

This past weekend we tried to run Lost Coast Trail. The trail was closed just past the cutoff down to Usal Beach. Someone put in a large yellow gate that was locked stating that the road was closed.
