Overview

Drive into narrow slot canyon as far as you can.

You’ll pass through Split Mountain with its towering walls and interesting exposed rock layers, then wander back and forth in super-wide Fish Creek Wash before entering narrow Sandstone Canyon. Giant rocks block this canyon at 1.7 miles, but some hard-core vehicles are getting through. The last 0.7 miles can be driven or hiked. Hike to Wind Caves is worth the extra time. Anza-Borrego Park is restricted to street-legal vehicles only.

Conditions in the canyon sometimes worsen after heavy rains, but this route is usually suitable for stock 4x4 SUVs. Dangerous flash floods are possible. Avoid if rain is forecast.

Approximately 2 miles before the end of the trail as described in the book, large house-sized boulder has blocked Sandstone Canyon. Can not pass in all but the most heavily modified vehicle, and even then, it is confirmed as not-allowed by an ABDSP ranger as you would have to drive two tires onto the canyon wall itself. Only choice to see the end of the canyon now is to hike in. Rockfall happened early December 2015.

Entered from north section “fish trail.” My first time, driving a stock Ram2500 4x4 with pop up camper. Amazing views of canyon walls and canyon wash. Some rain effects from recent storm, small boulders and rocks with a few deep sandy spots. Easily drove the trail with a few picky spots. Highly recommended as a day drive, the few campsites were taken. Saturday 12/02/2022 dry weather.
