Explore remote desert via driving and/or hiking. See old mines, desert wildlife, and the unique organpipe cactus. Enjoy beautiful scenic mountain backdrops. We loved our stay at the Twin Peaks Campground, open to tents through 45-ft. RVs (no hookups). To enhance your experience, get a copy of the “Ajo Mountain Drive Guide” at the visitor center. Street-legal vehicles only. We saw street-legal UTVs in use.

Good news, Puerto Blanco Drive, a larger (but still easy) 4×4 loop on the east side of Highway 85 is open again. It was closed the last time we were there due to fears that illegal immigrants posed a danger. The Ajo Mountain Drive is very easy with all steep sections paved. The north end is very beautiful with some great hiking trails. Don’t skip this part. I stayed with my small motorhome in the Twin Peaks Campground within the park and really enjoyed it. Although there are no hookups (just widely-spaced water spigots), the sites are all very nice with concrete pads. The rangers were very friendly and helpful.
