We’ve selected the southern route across Red & White Mountain on F.S. 734, which we find challenging and fun. This route descends through interesting June Creek Canyon to Avon. The northern route across F.S. 700 is a long uneventful trip over Muddy Pass to Highway 131 north of Wolcott. If you choose not to go down June Creek Canyon, turn right at Waypoint 05 to connect with F.S. 700, where you can continue west over Muddy Pass. June Creek Canyon is closed in the winter.

This trail was closed for a time to unlicensed vehicles, but it’s now open again at a point 6.5 miles up F.S. 700 starting from the Vail side as we describe in our books. You recognize this point because F.S. 734 goes to the left here, and straight ahead a short distance is a small parking area on the right. The lastest MVUM we looked at was done in 2018 (at the time of this writing). Make sure you use the summer map, Eagle-Holy Cross, back side. The winter map shows this area closed to unlicensed, which is for snowmobiles.
