Overview

Network of easy and moderate roads around Hans Peak.

The route described here takes you up Hahns Peak as far as motorized is allowed. Even though you can’t reach the top, the views are very impressive. This is a very popular area for ATVs and dirt bikes with many narrow side roads to explore. Our trip covers the key forest roads north of the peak. You may also wish to explore a network of roads south of the peak. Another option is to head south on F.S. 414 from Waypoint 05 and connect to Farwell Mountain, Trail #67. F.S. 490 and 418 are not closed seasonally. F.S. 413 and 414 are open June 15 to Dec. 1.

Narrow, steep and rocky in places. We encountered an unexpected washout south of Wpt. 04, but watched a full-size Suburban cross it with careful tire placement.

Road 490 between waypoint 04 and 05 is no longer a dead end. Apparently, the sinkhole has been repaired and the road is now open. It connects to the switchbacks that lead to waypoint 03.

Most of the trail is passable and easy to get through. Lots of downed trees, but there were guys up there with chainsaws while we were there and everything was clear. Tried to reach the summit of Hahn’s Peak but it was completely snow covered last .5 mile so we didn’t make it past the switchback.
