Overview

Popular scenic valley for camping and moose-watching.

A popular tourist destination. Absolutely stunning scenery at the reservoir. Camp in designated sites only. No reservations, so get there midweek for weekend spot. Surrounded by two wilderness areas and Rocky Mountain National Park. Popular moose-watching area. Permits needed for overnight hiking in the back country. Open when snow melts, usually in early July. Closed when snow begins, usually late November. Call ahead to be sure. Licensed vehicles only. NO OHVs.

On July 14 this road was closed due to fire hazard. Obviously this changes as needed, but not a bad idea to remind people to call ahead when such conditions exist.

Driving in, the beetle kill damage is a lot worse than it was when I drove it back in 2010, however, once you get to the reservoir, it looks about the same with the same spectacular views. I’d also like to point out that the Grandview Campground at the south end of the reservoir is tent camping only. I missed this on my first trip. Otherwise, the road itself was the same, except, perhaps, a bit more washboard. I did see a lot of moose this time. One stood right next to the road and didn’t move when I approached. You’ll see pictures when we publish the next edition of this book.
