This is the only place in Colorado where you can legally ride on major sand dunes. Although a long drive from the Front Range, it’s worth it. Additional 4-wheeling is available on a network of difficult roads north of the dunes. Lots of dispersed camping makes for great weekend outings. Bring your own firewood and pack out trash. Three vault toilets are shown on map. Introductory loop is optional since you can drive anywhere on dunes (some exceptions are posted).

We re-drove this route following the same tracklog as we drove in 2010. This time we were driving a stock Tacoma pickup truck instead of our wider-tired Jeep Wrangler TJ. Ended up getting stuck in soft sand on one of the steeper slopes in the trees where the wind-blown sand had accumulated. Lost control briefly and almost slid into a tree. Consequently, we decided to rate this part of the route difficult instead of moderate. Constantly shifting sand made the original route hard to follow.

ATV customers: If you are using the ATV Guide to Colorado Central Mountains, this trail is rated easy. You may not find it as difficult as stated above, but steep, soft sand can be quite challenging.
