Overview

Varying conditions at a mud bog make this trail unpredictable.

This trail is a side trip off Mosquito Pass, Trail #52. It’s reputation for difficulty has been largely based on a short section of mud bogs that, at one time, was almost impossible to get across. Recent repairs by the 4WD community have improved conditions, but this spot can still be a problem. Unlicensed vehicles usually enter from the north end off Hwy. 91 because of a large parking area next to the road.

In addition to the mud bogs, the road is steep and very rocky in spots. Although we cannot recommend this trail for stock SUVs, more aggressive models can do it.

Ran this trail on August 10, 2019 (in a 2016 4runner with 33s, 3" lift, skids and sliders) after going up and down the west side of Mosquito Pass. Fun trail, but very tight in the brush (lots of new pinstripes), very rocky, and a little low on scenery once you pass the bogs (which are completely absent now, after work completed by the 4x4 community) when headed north. The rocky wet section can be tricky if you meet someone halfway through, so a good peek ahead is prudent. We did get to watch the train from Leadville pass by, fun to wave at the folks onboard.

Ran Birdseye Gulch in a 1950 Willys Jeepster, a 2004 lifted Rubicon, and a lifted 2012 Jeep Sport. Since the reconstruction of the mud bog area, this trail should be rated no more than moderate. There are a couple of rocky areas, but nothing a decent 4X4 couldn't handle. Views are good and waiting at the railroad crossing for the Leadville train to pass is great. Well worth your time and effort. Downgrade to moderate would make this more inviting to fellow 4X4ers.

It's the trail that keeps on giving!! A good balance of scenic and challenging areas, highly recommend connecting to it after Mosquito. There is a rock garden that is better with higher clearance, I wouldn't recommend stock vehicles. We did fine, all on 33s and 2-3" lifts, the mud bog is no joke! If you can't make it through, turn around, don't create side trails please.
