Trail Updates

Submitted by FunTreks
We rode this trail in the summer of 2019 in a UTV. It has gotten rougher and we increased the rating to difficult. The route is pretty much the same until you get to the very top, where we found several new roads winding around the peak. This trail is combined with Baldwin Lakes in the ATV Guide to Colorado Central Mountains. See that trail for updates. For the most up-to-date information on this trail, see our new 4th Edition Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails, set to be released April 2019.

Rate this trail on a scale of 1 to 5.

This is a great trail with a short hike to a 14er summit from the end of the road. The miners drive an excavator up and down each summer and do minor road maintenance if necessary for their pickups. Great memorable views from numerous tight switchbacks. A mountain goat or two are often hanging out at the end of the road. Definitely worth doing.

What a fun trail!!! The switchbacks were tight in a few areas but my 2020 4Runner TRD made it fine. The shelf part of the trail is amazing, if you have issues with heights I don't recommend this trail. You have to get creative for clearing traffic coming the opposite direction because it is one way. We had to backup into one of the switch elbows to let an oncoming Jeep pass. I'm excited to do it again!!
