Overview

Explore once active mining area just west of Silverton.

We explored this trail on a foggy, rainy day. Even then, the scenery was impressive; however, to get the most out of your trip, do it on a clear day. To fully appreciate this incredible mining area, we recommend you take the guided tour at the Mayflower Mill on County Road 2, near start of trail. It’s a rare opportunity to see a complete, intact mill. Call (970) 387-0294.

We took only the portion of the trail to the Little Giant Basin. Be aware of an outcropping of rock overhead about a quarter of a mile after the turn to Little Giant Basin. The road where the outcropping is narrows but is passable. The Big Giant Mine area is now marked as Private Property which was not the case 2 years ago. We got some great pictures of the mountains and reflections from the small lakes there. I seem to get my best pictures of my trip to Silverton from this area.
