This scenic trail cuts through the heart of old mining country as it winds between Red Mountain #1 and #2. Watch for logging trucks on lower part of trail. You can park and camp at bottom end of trail off Highway 550. From the bottom, you can also explore Gray Copper Gulch, which is left at the first major fork, marked as Brown Mountain. Trails become impassable in the winter season.

Drove these two August 7, 2019. I’m glad they’ve been upgraded to blue. They were pretty choppy (with a few wash-outs on the side of the trail you need to be watchful of – don’t make all those corners so tightly) due to the record run-off this season. Nothing difficult, but no longer greens. TONS of avalanche damage on Corkscrew at the bottom. We measured one section of damage at 1/2 mile long. It was obvious many trees had been cut and winched off the road to make it passable. Let’s hear it for San Juan County Road and Bridge – good job! Wildflowers are a bit late this season. We hope they have a chance to bloom before the snow hits again
Due to our findings driving this trail in the summer of 2018, we have changed the rating of this trail to Moderate in our 4th edition book from Easy in our 3rd edition.
