Vehicle Types

Great views and impressive mine structures.

Easy road accesses great camping and hiking. Last part of route, above Pennsylvania Mine, reaches a dramatic viewpoint at a tram house. More difficult terrain can be found on Warden Gulch and upper portion of Cinnamon Gulch. Another side trip is Chihuahua Gulch, described separately.

Trail Ratings Defined

Forest Road 260 can be driven in a high clearance twowheel- drive vehicle. The climb above Pennsylvania Mine is best done in 4-wheel drive. Warden Gulch is extremely steep and rocky and not ecommended for stock SUVs.

A sign at the start of the trail shows this road open to unlicensed vehicles from the start, however, the 2018 MVUM for the Dillon Ranger District shows unlicensed vehicles starting 2 miles farther in, where Warden Gulch goes to the right.

Bill says

8-7-2023 we drove this road up to the Pennsylvania mill and then up to the tram house. The road is easy but has a lot of potholes so you have to go slow. There are a lot of designated campsites along the way, most of them are very small, but there is a lot of demand and most were in use. The mill is very interesting but not in good shape so I don't recommend going inside. It is a short steep road up to the tram house but has very good views so this is recommended. Beware there are a lot of mosquitos on this road so be prepared if you are going to camp.
