Overview

An old mining camp, a stone cabin and a narrow wash are all part of this fun trail.

You’ll climb to an old mining camp and see remains of a stone cabin and scattered mining equipment. The trail gets interesting after Waypoint 04, where you enter a narrowing wash and climb partway into the Mohave Mountains. We saw colorful wildflowers in late March, small saguaro cacti, and a few Joshua trees.

Franconia Road is a main access road and is very easy. After Waypoint 04, you enter a gravelly wash that starts easy but gradually gets more challenging. A tight squeeze between large rocks 0.2 miles before Scotts Well will stop wider stock vehicles, but it’s a short walk to the well from here. The exit route is a fun, single-lane, winding road along and across a series of ridges.

The recent monsoons have washed out most of the trail to Scotts Well. You can get to waypoint 4 with no issues. Halfway between waypoint 4 and 5 there are numerous washouts that make navigation extremely difficult. Travel after midpoint of 4 and 5 is nearly impossible unless you have at least 20″ clearance, a winch, articulated suspension, and lots of horsepower. Many large boulders have washed down and there is no trail anymore. we got to about a quarter mile of the well and had to turn around. Great cell service out there though!
